Questia Media, Inc., Reaches Landmark And Signs 100th Publisher
with Stanford University Press

HOUSTON (Sept. 18, 2000) - In its pursuit to build the first-of-its-kind online research service for undergraduates, Questia Media, Inc., has signed Stanford University Press as its 100th publisher. Questia expects to digitize more than 1,000 of Stanford's liberal arts titles over two years. At launch in January 2001, the Questia service will provide students with simultaneous access to its hyperlinked online collection of 50,000 scholarly books and journals, combined with a suite of writing tools that will make composing papers faster and easier.

"Our relationship with Questia underscores our shared conviction that the Internet can be an extremely valuable resource for conducting scholarly research," commented Norris Pope, director Stanford University Press. "As Internet accessibility increases globally," adds John Zotz, deputy director of the Press and manager of electronic publishing, "it is important that students have access to refereed, quality, scholarly titles. With Questia's service and our collection, students will have immediate access to the same scholarly books and journals found in the world's best collegiate libraries."

Stanford is the newest publisher to join Questia's lengthy list of renowned and respected publishing houses. M.E. Sharpe, Inc., Mc-Gill-Queens University Press, Peter Lang Publishing, Pearson Education, Greenwood Publishing Group, Fitzroy Dearborn Publishers, Rutgers University Press, Amadeus Press, Westminster/John Knox Press, Pendragon Press, University of British Columbia Press, Four Walls Eight Windows, and Resources for the Future have been signed in the last few weeks providing for as many as 13,000 books to be included in Questia over the next two years. Significant other prestigious university presses such as Columbia University Press, University of Chicago Press and Duke University Press are included in Questia's research service.

"As our 100thpublisher, Stanford University Press joins other industry leaders in setting the course for the future of electronic publishing," said CEO and founder Troy Williams. "Stanford is a recognized industry leader in the Silicon Valley, and through their agreement with Questia, thousands of their titles will be available online for the first time to students."

Stanford is a leading publisher of scholarly books and publishes in a wide range of academic disciplines. The Press will benefit from Questia's unique business model, in which publishers are compensated each time a page in a book or journal is viewed, even though users get unlimited access to the collection fora set fee. This model generates increased revenues for current, backlist, and out-of-print titles, allowing publishers to maximize profits from this new revenue stream.

The publishing community's biggest issue has always stemmed from keeping books in print, and seeking methods for mining revenue from backlist titles, Zotz said. The Questia service is the first new opportunity for us to rejuvenate older titles and provide an annuity stream for years to come. All our books on Questia have the advantage of never needing to go out of print again.
